While it is true that I am far from being Lord of the Dance, it is also true that when somebody drops free tickets to a show I vaguely remember seeing too much of on the Target Video Network, I will go and see it.
These are my immediate reactions from the Riverdance performance on Wednesday night:
1.) The Music – It was as if a Pure Moods CD was conjured up and given life by one of those young wizards from the Harry Potter movies who doesn’t quite know how to control his powers yet.
2.) The Cast – The cast listing reminded me of a hokey family show filmed in a place like Branson, Missouri. There were the Riverdance Dancers, the Riverdance Band, the Riverdance Dramatic Troupe… I kept waiting to meet the Riverdance Ushers.
3.) The Dance – Wow, can those people tap. And jump. And do whatever all of those ballet moves are called. It really is an impressive physical feat to perform some of the sequences featured in the Riverdance show. Fifty feet tapping away at a mile a minute just sounds cool. Also, there was a Russian dance scene which had this guy spinning a girl like a top at a speed that I wouldn’t have thought humanly possible.
Overall, it was a fun show. Definitely worth the ten bucks to park, though I’m glad the tickets were complimentary. I don’t think I would have been satisfied with the experience if I had paid full price, and I don’t see myself waiting in line at the video store to rent the DVD.
There. My first theatre review. I imagine it will be the last for quite a while. Have a good weekend, everybody.
