Since CNN spent their budget going to live coverage of Paris Hilton getting out of jail last night (yes, I was watching CNN at midnight… get over it), I figured I would recap some interesting bits of actual news I read while traveling last week.
From the 6/21/07 USA today:
Missing: Large Lake in Southern Chile
A lake in southern Chile has mysteriously disappeared, prompting speculation the ground has simply opened up and swallowed it whole.
The current theory is that the area was hit by a small earthquake, causing a crack to open in the ground and drain the lake. Apparently, this happened so fast that nobody actually saw it and the lake was just gone the next time somebody bothered to look.
Note to self: Cancel spring break plans for Chile.
Second note to self: Don’t go in the water. Anywhere. Ever again.
Guard Fires 10 Shots Outside of Army Hospital
An armed security guard fired as many as 10 shots at another guard during an argument outside a busy entrance to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., striking two parked cars but injuring no one, police said yesterday.
Apparently, the word “retarded” was tossed out at the wrong guy in an argument.
I can’t believe people are still settling arguments with guns, anyway. What happened to punching and grappling? Do we need to install UFC Octagons next to every Starbucks to give feuding people a place to let off steam?
The other thing to note: a trained veteran emptied the magazine on his 9mm Beretta and only managed to hit two parked cars. This does not bode well for our success in the current wars or any others.
