So, I was looking around my office, trying to think of something witty to write, when my eyes laned on the wall calendar, where I saw that today is Flag Day.
“That’s great!” I exclaimed to myself, sending a wave of fear througout the office. (Have you ever noticed how uncomfortable people get when you exclaim things to yourself? Try it at a library, and you’ll see what I mean.)
Anyway, I figured it would be a great opportunity to go online and look up a little history on the flag. Drop a few Betsy Ross jokes that I’ve been keeping in my back pocket for just such an occassion. Maybe write a poem or two with heart-wrenching lyrics about how patriotic I am and what the red, white and blue means to me.
I was going to give Old Glory the best blog entry ever.
And then… I saw an ‘M’ next to the text proclaiming that this was Flag Day. Parenthetically seperated from the words “Flag Day” so as to denote that there was something askew about this particular holiday reference on my giant wall calendar.
A quick investigation deduced that this was not the Flag Day I’d grown up celebrating my whole life. It was just another day as far as those of us in America were concerned. Heck, I could probably burn a flag on the street today and nobody would even notice.
Nope, today is Día de la Bandera.
Sigh…
Happy Flag Day, Mexico.
